Balearic tutors get less than 40 euros a month

Teachers in the Balearic Islands who take on tutor duties receive less than 40 euros a month for the work. On Thursday, UGT Servicios Públicos called for a financial payment for tutors at every education level. The union says only 11 autonomous communities pay an allowance for the role.

Tutoring is central to tailoring learning to pupils’ needs and pace, UGT says. It also helps teachers spot difficulties and provide support, with the aim of preventing pupils from falling behind or leaving school early.

Big differences between regions

The Balearic Islands are one of four autonomous communities where the monthly allowance is below 40 euros. The others are Andalusia, the Canary Islands and Castile and León.

Four communities pay more than 60 euros: Catalonia, Galicia, the Basque Country and Murcia. At secondary level, that group rises to six when Madrid and the education ministry’s area are included.

Catalonia pays the highest amount, at 93.60 euros, although its primary-school rate is 66.56 euros. Tutors in Castile and León receive the lowest sum: 20 euros at every stage.

UGT calls for time and incentives

UGT says the tutor role needs stronger recognition. It is asking education authorities to provide enough time within teachers’ working days, as well as professional and financial incentives.

The union points to Article 105 of the LOE education law, which it says was not changed by the LOMLOE. It wants each education authority to move closer to those rules, both on working time and recognition for tutor duties.
