Mallorca fires burn 29.6 hectares in 56 blazes
Mallorca’s 56 fires leave 29.6 hectares burnt as the high-risk season ends on 15 October 2026. Across the Balearic Islands, 32 hectares burned between 1 May and 15 October — twice as much as in the same period last year. Balearic agriculture and natural environment minister Joan Simonet set out the figures in Palma on 15 October.
The largest fire by area among those given the lower severity rating burned ten hectares at Can Milec in Muro, Mallorca. Another fire, at Son Fortesa in Puigpunyent, Mallorca, burned 2.2 hectares. Simonet said the fires had remained small despite very high temperatures and significant dry spells over the summer.
There were 72 fires across the Balearics during the high-risk season, 12 more than a year earlier. Initial findings link 99 per cent to human activity, including negligence, accidents and deliberate acts. Investigations have yet to finish.
Around 350 professionals were part of the firefighting operation, backed by five helicopters and five planes that could move between islands when needed. Simonet warned that the end of the high-risk season is no reason to relax precautions: forest fires remain possible throughout the year.
