Balearics funding plan ignores island needs, says PP

A proposed funding plan for Spain’s regions goes to a vote on Friday, with the PP claiming it sidelines the Balearics’ needs. Sebastià Sagreras, the party’s coordinator and spokesman in the Balearic Parliament, said in Palma on Thursday that the plan weakens the value placed on island status. He also said it fails to account for population growth or the floating population.

The central government is taking the proposal to the Council for Fiscal and Financial Policy. Sagreras said the factors raised by the PP are crucial for the Balearics, alongside the cost of living.

He said the party would continue to press for those criteria, which he described as having broad social and political backing across the islands. Health and education unions have voiced the same view in recent weeks, he added.

Sagreras said the government had previously signalled it was open to talks on the regional funding system. But he claimed the plan is now closed because it has already been agreed with Catalonia.

The PP had called for multilateral negotiations, he said. Sagreras accused Pedro Sánchez’s government of ignoring proposals from Spain’s autonomous communities and putting the same plan announced at the outset to Friday’s vote.
