Palma: Balearics job record fails to ease housing strain

A record number of people registered with Social Security in August has not lifted the pressure on daily life in the Balearics, UGT says. The union said in Palma on 2 September that high housing costs, heavy workloads and gaps in public services are leaving people under constant strain. It warned against treating precarious living conditions as normal simply because employment has reached a new high.

UGT called the latest unemployment and Social Security figures, released on Wednesday by the Ministries of Labour and Social Security, unsurprising. It said unemployment usually rises in August compared with July, even during the tourist high season.

The union said the monthly rise in unemployment may also be linked to the migrant regularisation process. It described the year-on-year fall in joblessness as modest and warned that the pace of reductions seen after the pandemic recovery will be hard to sustain.

UGT said the islands face major challenges despite what it called full employment during the tourist months. It wants an urgent reshaping of the economic model to improve living conditions and wellbeing across the Balearics.
