Balearics school brand rules add 20% to costs

Families at some public nursery and primary schools in the Balearics are being told to buy school supplies from named brands, consumer group Consubal says. The group raised the alarm on 28 August 2026, saying the requirement adds between 15% and 20% to family spending. It says parents at some schools have reported being given lists specifying the brands children must bring.

Consubal calls the practice irregular and has asked the Balearic Government to intervene.

School bills can pass 620 euros

For the 2026-2027 school year, starting primary school at a public school can cost more than 620 euros, according to Consubal. The bill can reach 1,000 euros at state-subsidised or private schools when uniforms and other items are included.

The group also wants state-subsidised schools to drop compulsory uniforms, arguing that this would ease September costs.

Fast loans add to the pressure

The Balearics stand 15% above the national average, Consubal says. It says many families turn to fast loans carrying interest of up to 30%.

According to the consumer group, those loans can leave people unable to pay other bills, including electricity or rent.
