Bars stay open until 02.00 in Sa Vileta, Palma, Mallorca: neighbours at Plaza de Tarent say the shouting keeps them awake. In a statement on Thursday, 8 October, their residents’ association said up to three bars in the area remain open until 01.00 or 02.00. It says the trouble has continued every day since the start of summer.

Noise, fights and rubbish

The neighbours say groups gather in and around the square to take cannabis or cocaine. Others drink in the square’s car park, with loud music late into the night. They also report arguments and fights in the bars, sometimes involving thrown glasses or chairs.

The association says cans, bottles, food scraps and vomit are left in the square. Some neighbours use earplugs or take pills to get to sleep. They had hoped things would improve after summer, but say the problems are getting worse.

Neighbours call on Palma council to act

The association says it has complained repeatedly to Palma City Council without receiving an answer or a solution. It says it has also called the Local Police many times, but officers rarely come unless a fight is reported. When officers leave after a fight has ended, the noise returns, the neighbours say.

They want the council to address their complaints and enforce what they say is a 23.00 closing time for the bars. They also want police to attend every reported incident and stay longer. The association says it has been patient, but its members have gone many months without sleep.
