Mallorca bishop calls for more cash for homeless people
Mallorca’s bishop says even a normal wage can struggle to cover the rent: he wants public bodies to spend more on people without a home. Sebastià Taltavull made the call in Palma, Mallorca, on Thursday, 22 October, after an event ahead of the Day of Homeless People. He said some public spending mainly benefits people who already have homes, while those without one are overlooked.
Taltavull praised the Church and groups linked to it, including Càritas, Sojorn and La Sapiència, for taking in people with nowhere to live. But he said people who turn down help need support too. After the former Palma prison was cleared at the start of summer, a few of those affected accepted help from the Church; others refused it. Taltavull called for further efforts to help them, saying no one should be left without proper food, sleep or a place to build a life.
Asked about recent comments against migrants from some political parties, the bishop pointed to the Gospel’s call to welcome strangers. Rejecting someone because of their race or where they come from is inhumane, he said. Everyone has dignity and should be welcomed in some way.
