Mallorca: Blanquerna bike lane removal starts in December
In Palma, Mallorca, the council plans to start removing the bike lane from pedestrianised Blanquerna in early December, once a temporary route opens on 31 de Desembre. Work on the replacement is due to begin this week, Palma City Council said on 13 October. Neighbours and traders had called for the change because of safety concerns on the pedestrian street.
Where cyclists will go
The temporary bike lane will run along the side of 31 de Desembre with even-numbered buildings. It will continue across Abu Yahya square and along Francesc Suau. The council expects it to open in early December, when removal of the Blanquerna lane is due to begin.
Why the lane is moving
The council says the bike lane has caused problems for people sharing Blanquerna. An assessment by its Mobility Department identified the stretch as one of the main trouble spots on Palma’s bike lane network.
The replacement is only temporary. The council plans a permanent bike lane on the opposite side of 31 de Desembre and will draw up the project and put the work out to tender. That work will include changes to the public space and the road to make room for the new route.
