Police order Palma terraces cleared over Born disorder fears

National Police have ordered restaurants and bars on Palma’s Passeig del Born to remove their non-fixed terrace furniture on Wednesday, 26 August. The move comes before Brunzzit’s outdoor supper gathering that afternoon. Its organisers reject police fears of vandalism or disorder.

Palma City Council said the order was not made by the municipal government. It described the action as a preventive security measure communicated by National Police, while the Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands has authorised the public event.

Police cite trouble after tourism protest

Police say removing the furniture is essential to reduce public-order risks and prevent possible damage or disturbances. Their information unit points to incidents on 26 July, after the large protest against mass tourism called by Menys Turisme, Més Vida.

According to the police document, confrontations then broke out in areas with outdoor tables. It reports arguments, insults and tension involving customers and hospitality workers on the Born, with customers leaving hurriedly for safety reasons.

Police also point to Brunzzit’s stated aim of “freeing public space”. They believe this could lead to action against terraces and tables along the route, including coercion, sabotage or direct confrontations with businesses.

Brunzzit plans a walk and use of benches

Brunzzit says its outdoor supper events, held at different sites in Palma since last summer, have taken place without incidents. The group says it has never given grounds for the initiative to be treated as criminal.

For its final event of 2026, Brunzzit has invited people to walk along the Born with grandparents and other relatives. The organisers say they do not initially plan to put out tables or chairs, and will instead use the avenue’s benches.
