Cala Galdana water upgrade clears first hurdle
Cala Galdana, Menorca, has won approval for the first phase of an upgrade to its drinking water network. The Balearic Government signed off the plan on Tuesday, 1 September, for works in the Ferreries municipality. The decision sets safeguards for streams, their protected corridors and areas prone to flooding.
The project was drawn up in August 2025. The Directorate General for Water Resources assessed its potential impact on public water land and the surrounding stream channels.
Ferreries filed its application in February
Ferreries Town Hall applied for permission on 24 February 2026. The Service for the Management of Public Water Land issued a favourable technical report on 22 May.
The plan also went through public consultation without receiving any objections. The approval now lays down technical conditions for the work.
Rules set for stream crossings
The strictest conditions cover where the new installations cross stream channels. They are intended to keep water flowing freely and protect public water land.
The approval lasts for four years from the day after it is notified. Ferreries will need a fresh technical report if it makes major changes that could alter water conditions, and must tell the Directorate General for Water Resources when the works are complete.
