Cala Llombards car park closure demanded by GOB
GOB has called for the immediate closure of the Cala Llombards car park in Santanyí, Mallorca, saying vehicles are being parked on land classified as beach. The environmental group made the demand on 18 August 2026, addressing it to the Coastal Authority and Santanyí Town Council.
GOB said it first reported the occupation of the publicly owned maritime-terrestrial area four years ago. It said subsequent administrative and court proceedings had upheld its case, but that the council had not removed car-park signs and the Coastal Authority had not stopped vehicles continuing to park there.
Court case and parking ban
After a further complaint by GOB in May 2022, the Coastal Surveillance Service inspected the site. The administrative file, later cited in a ruling by the Balearic Islands High Court, found that the car park lies on land classified as beach.
GOB said parking and vehicle movement are prohibited on such land under the General Coastal Regulation. It added that the Coastal Authority found no authorisation for use of the public maritime-terrestrial domain as a car park.
The Coastal Authority asked Santanyí Town Council to shut the facility and said it would install signs stating that parking is prohibited. According to GOB, the council challenged the request by referring to a 2018 authorisation concerning the demarcation of beach access and exit routes, but the court rejected that argument last May.
Dune recovery concerns
GOB has also linked the continued parking to damage to the dune system at Cala Llombards. In 2018, it reported that machinery had destroyed a dune formation of about 300 square metres on the beach's northern coast.
A protected area later enabled some vegetation to return, the group said. However, it argued that the continued presence of the car park is preventing the dune system from fully recovering.
