Mallorca beachgoers stop Cala Major phone theft

Beachgoers at Cala Major, Mallorca, stopped two suspected thieves after a bag and two mobile phones were taken from a woman and a man who had gone into the sea. Palma Local Police arrested the men, aged 21 and 26, after officers were called to the pedestrian promenade near Calle Gavina at about 23.40 on Thursday. The belongings were returned to their owners on the beach.

The pair had spotted the two men before going into the water and kept watch over their things, police said. But once they were swimming, the suspects allegedly grabbed their clothes, took the phones and bag, and headed towards the promenade.

Their calls for help brought tourists and other people on the beach together to block the men's way. Surrounded by beachgoers, the suspects allegedly hurled the phones into the sand and threw the bag aside.

Both men denied the allegation and were described by officers as uncooperative. Palma Local Police handed them over to the National Police after arresting them on suspicion of theft.
