Mallorca’s Calvià honours painter and music society

Calvià, Mallorca, honours the late painter Antoni Alzamora and the Associació Cultural Musical Pere Josep Canyelles on 30 October. The council will present its Rei en Jaume 2026 honorary awards at Sala Palmanova. Alzamora’s award comes after his death in 2026.

The music society grew from a council decision in 1984 to create a music school and municipal band. Formally established in 1986, it now includes a choir, a dance school and other groups alongside the school and band. It takes its name from Pere Josep Canyelles, a priest, musician and composer born in Calvià.

Alzamora was born in Artà, Mallorca, in 1933 and lived in Calvià from the age of 18. His paintings of Mallorca’s countryside and rural life hang in the council chamber and other rooms of the town hall. He won gold medals at local art competitions in Calvià in 1967 and 1968.
