Mallorca’s young adults have 132 places on November’s Camino de Santiago trips: pre-registration opens on Wednesday, with each place costing €202.50. The Consell de Mallorca, the island council, is organising four departures for people aged 18 to 30 who live on the island. Each group will walk about 114 kilometres from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela, the Galician capital.

Five stages to Santiago

The seven-day trips include six nights away and five walking stages on the Camino Francés, or French Way. Walkers will cover between 19 and 29 kilometres a day with an official Camino de Santiago guide. The council describes the route as moderately difficult to difficult and says participants need good physical fitness.

The four trips run from 1 to 7, 8 to 14, 15 to 21 and 22 to 28 November. Each has 33 places.

How to get a place

Applicants must live on Mallorca, hold a valid travel residency certificate and be fit enough to complete the walk. Places will go to eligible applicants through a public draw. Pre-registration closes on 19 October and is available through the Consell de Mallorca’s electronic office, also accessible from its youth website.

The council will pay 70 per cent of the cost. The €202.50 participant price covers return flights from Palma, bus transfers, baggage transport during the walk, hostel accommodation, full board, guides and insurance.
