Can Misses A&E staff seek hard-to-fill status

Doctors at Hospital de Can Misses in Ibiza want its A&E department classed as a hard-to-fill post, with incentives attached. The Balearic doctors’ union Simebal put the plan and other measures to the Balearic Health Service (IBSalut) on 26 August. It says pressure on the department has raised concerns over staffing for more than a year and could affect patients.

Simebal says some steps previously proposed by IBSalut have lost impact under the weight of demand and the particular demands of A&E work.

More support and private referrals

The union wants greater backing from hospital departments whose conditions are most commonly treated in A&E. It says the affected services should agree the arrangements and receive suitable extra resources.

It also proposes agreements with private hospitals or clinics to refer foreign patients there, whether they have private insurance or a European health card.

Round-the-clock service and weekly checks

Simebal is calling for a 24-hour SUAP service to support urgent cases and reduce hospital referrals. It also wants weekly meetings with hospital department heads to monitor how the service is working and put forward improvements.

The union says it will keep pressing the health department and IBSalut to act. It also wants to recruit and retain doctors able to deal with any demand arriving in A&E.
