Can Pesquet plot: Palma plans compulsory purchase
Palma City Council said on 24 August that it will seek to acquire the Can Pesquet plot in Son Sardina, Palma, Mallorca, and will begin compulsory-purchase proceedings if it cannot agree a sale with the current owner.
The approximately 1,600-square-metre site is earmarked for neighbourhood facilities, potentially including a community centre and library. Both services are currently housed in premises rented by the council. Plans could also include a public square and parking to help address the area’s shortage of spaces.
Mayor Jaime Martínez had pledged in August last year to buy the land. The council said Solvia, the firm marketing the site, sold it to a third party despite knowing that Palma wanted it for public facilities.
The council said it is now taking the necessary steps to reach a purchase agreement with the owner. Whether through a negotiated sale or compulsory purchase, it intends to transfer the plot into municipal ownership. Neighbourhood associations and local organisations will be involved in the process.
