Canada scholarships send 14 Mallorca pupils abroad

Fourteen pupils from Mallorca have left for Canada on excellence scholarships for the first term of the school year. They were among 24 fourth-year ESO pupils who departed on Saturday, 29 August, with the other recipients coming from Menorca and Eivissa. The group will soon begin classes in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta or Nova Scotia.

Catalina Ginart, the Balearic Islands’ Director General for Educational Planning and Management, saw the pupils off at the airport. The scholarships are intended to build their English communication skills while supporting their personal and academic development in a different educational and cultural setting.

€300,000 covers travel, host families and insurance

The Balearic Islands’ Education and Universities Ministry has put €300,000 into the scheme. It pays for travel from each pupil’s home island to Canada and the journey home after the term ends.

The funding also covers accommodation and meals with a host family, school enrolment arrangements, leisure, sporting and cultural activities, insurance and individual support throughout the term.

Ireland scheme backed 25 pupils last year

Last school year, the Balearic government spent €200,000 on scholarships for 25 fourth-year ESO pupils to attend the second term in Ireland.

The Education Ministry said both pupils and their families rated that stay very positively.
