Palma car break-ins: suspect arrested

Spain’s National Police said on 23 August that they had arrested a man over two alleged car break-ins in Palma, Mallorca, including one in the El Rafal neighbourhood. Officers linked him to a second incident days earlier, in which 100 euros in cash was allegedly taken from a vehicle.

Two members of the public called the 091 emergency line in the early hours of Saturday after seeing someone smash the rear window of a parked car. They gave officers a physical description, prompting several patrols to search El Rafal.

Police later found a man matching the witnesses’ description and arrested him on suspicion of theft from a vehicle involving forced entry.

Investigators said the suspect, who is of Senegalese origin, had allegedly carried out the earlier break-in by smashing a car window before taking the cash. The Balearic Islands’ National Police headquarters said he had been arrested more than twenty times since the start of the year, mostly over similar alleged offences.
