Menorca car limit vote delayed in row over loopholes
Menorca’s planned car limit is on hold after the Island Council delayed Monday’s special sitting until Wednesday. Councillors were due to amend the Biosphere Reserve law to cap the number of vehicles on the island. But the Partido Popular (PP), which governs without a majority, needs a deal with left-wing parties because non-attached councillor Maite de Medrano is not backing the change.
The PSOE requested the delay to give it 48 hours to examine the PP proposal. The party wants tighter restrictions and the removal of exemptions included in the PP’s original plan.
It wants to stop second-home owners and people from other Balearic Islands bypassing the vehicle limit. It also demands strict checks on car-hire firms to prevent them exploiting legal loopholes.
The delayed Wednesday sitting will now decide whether, and in what form, Menorca’s car limit can go ahead.
