Palma carbon monoxide leaves two tourists critical

Two German tourists, aged 34 and 42, were found unconscious in their hotel room in Palma, Mallorca, after carbon monoxide poisoning. They were taken to Hospital Son Llàtzer in a critical condition. Emergency services were alerted at about midnight on Saturday, sending Playa de Palma police reinforcement patrols, ambulances and Palma Fire Brigade crews to the hotel.

Odourless gas forces hotel evacuation

Firefighters recorded high levels of carbon monoxide, an odourless gas the women did not detect. Emergency services said this may explain why they had been unconscious for a long time.

A hotel employee also suffered a mild poisoning. The whole building was evacuated so it could be ventilated.

Nearby rooms sealed as police investigate

Rooms close to the tourists' room were sealed off. Other rooms were allowed to be occupied again after checks found them safe.

The National Police are investigating. Early inquiries point to poor combustion or a faulty hot-water boiler installation.
