Mallorca care projects get €1.25m in free support

People with serious illnesses or disabilities on Mallorca and across the Balearics are set to receive more free day-to-day support under a 1.25 million euro funding call. The Balearic Government’s Ministry of Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care published the call in the Official Gazette of the Balearic Islands on Saturday. Non-profit private organisations can apply to run services for those affected and their carers.

The money covers support for people with cancer, Alzheimer’s and other dementias, neurodegenerative conditions, rare diseases, and physical or mental disabilities. The ministry says the aim is to help people keep their abilities, shape their lives as independently as possible and take part in their communities on equal terms.

Two funding pots

A total of 534,000 euros is reserved for projects supporting people with cancer, Alzheimer’s, other dementias, neurodegenerative illnesses and rare diseases. A further 724,000 euros is available for projects for people with disabilities.

This year’s budget is 150,000 euros higher than in previous years. Social Welfare Minister Sandra Fernández said every project represented people who need support to carry on with as much independence as possible, as well as families and carers who need support too.

Services must remain free

Organisations receiving the funding must offer their services free of charge and on a solidarity basis. They may ask only for occasional symbolic contributions, which cannot be treated as payment for the service.

The ministry said the funding is intended to give social organisations greater stability so they can continue providing this support.
