Palma and Maó cinemas screen Carmen opera on Thursday
Carmen reaches cinemas in Palma and Maó on Thursday in a 150-minute filmed production directed by Arnaud Bernard. The opera was recorded at Austria’s St. Margarethen festival in 2023 and is the fifth title in the óh!pera Summer series.
Bernard shifts the story to a 1950s Hollywood film shoot, where a film about the Spanish Civil War is being made in the background. The festival says this Carmen is freer and less of a traditional femme fatale.
Sung in French with Spanish subtitles, the opera follows Carmen’s destructive relationship with the soldier Don José. His obsession with her drives him to abandon his duty and lose everything.
óh!pera Summer brings filmed opera productions from open-air venues to cinemas during the summer. Carmen will also be shown in more than 50 cinemas across Spain from Thursday.
