Carob award to Promorent criticised by MÉS in Mallorca
MÉS per Mallorca on 18 August 2026 criticised the award of Carob to property company Promorent in Palma, Mallorca, rather than to Camp Mallorquí. The party called on the Balearic Government to monitor the conditions attached to the ruling for the next three years and secure the future of carob gum production on the island.
MÉS said the decision would further weaken Mallorca’s primary sector. It also accused the government of failing to act after Carob entered insolvency proceedings.
Concerns over jobs and production
The party questioned the court decision, arguing that it did not protect long-term employment or continued production of carob gum. Instead, MÉS said, it appeared focused on generating money quickly.
Ferran Rosa, MÉS’s representative in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, said the government viewed farming and agricultural businesses as property assets rather than as an economic driver and foundation of food sovereignty. He warned that the property-sector award could ultimately lead to Carob’s closure amid development pressure.
Call for oversight
Rosa said Promorent was unlikely to enter the primary sector to diversify its business, and suggested the company could dismantle Carob and speculate with the site after three years.
MÉS said Agama, Piema and s'Esplet had closed during the current parliamentary term, without the government ensuring either jobs or food production continued. The party demanded oversight of the resolution’s obligations over the coming three years, followed by guarantees that carob gum production remains in Mallorca.
