Carob process in Marratxí raises farming concerns

Coalició per Mallorca has called on the government to closely monitor the Carob insolvency process and use all available legal options to safeguard the plant’s agricultural-industrial role in Marratxí, Mallorca. The party made the appeal on Monday, 24 August, saying any final outcome should protect the facility’s links with growers and allow its activity to continue over the long term.

The party said it accepted the legality of the insolvency proceedings, but argued that Carob’s future was more than a commercial matter. The Marratxí plant is part of Mallorca’s carob-processing chain, and its future could directly affect carob cultivation and the island’s producers.

Coalició per Mallorca said public authorities should act within the law to ensure that the company remains closely connected to Mallorca’s agricultural sector. It said a future solution should maintain carob processing on the island, provide growers with a stable relationship with the plant and offer the crop a lasting outlook.

The party also said the case highlighted the importance of local processing industries for strengthening crops, adding value, reducing dependence and creating economic alternatives for the primary sector. It warned that losing such infrastructure would reduce productive capacity and put the future of Mallorca’s countryside at risk.
