Balearic health sciences: just 27.6% taught in Catalan
Health sciences courses at the University of the Balearic Islands use Catalan for just 27.6% of teaching: no other subject area in its study has a lower share. The university released the findings on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. The study compares teaching languages in undergraduate degrees across the 2025–2026 and 2026–2027 academic years.
Medicine tells a different story within health sciences. Its share of teaching in Catalan has risen from 9.9% to 22.5% — the biggest increase in the study, at 12.6 percentage points. Business, employment and tourism-related subjects also have relatively low shares.
At the other end of the scale, 63.5% of arts and humanities teaching is in Catalan. Geography has the highest share of any degree, at 83.1%.
A falling percentage does not necessarily mean fewer hours taught in Catalan, the university cautions. This year’s figures include courses taught in Spanish or English for which it had no information last year. It will keep collecting data to track changes and assess its language-policy measures.
