Mallorca: Three days of talks on Catalan music

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Mallorca puts Catalan music in focus for three days: talks at Ca n'Oleo in Palma run from Thursday to Saturday. Obra Cultural Balear and the Faculty of Education at the University of the Balearic Islands have organised the programme.

The event marks 40 years of policies promoting the use of Catalan and 50 years of the music group Cucorba. Through talks, discussions and guided listening, it will look at how songs carry language and shared memories.

The opening begins at 18.45 on Thursday, followed by a talk from music scholar Jaume Ayats on songs people know together and remember. Friday turns to school songs and a discussion of 40 years of music in Catalan.

On Saturday, Cucorba members will look back at the group's history. A final discussion will consider younger generations, new musical styles and the future challenges facing Catalan music.
