Mallorca loses ex-tourism minister Celestí Alomar at 76

Mallorca has lost former tourism minister Celestí Alomar, who died on Monday aged 76. The Fòrum de la Societat Civil said his death leaves an important gap, while his ideas will remain part of its work. The organisation is to dedicate its next diversification congress, due in December, to his memory.

Alomar had argued that Mallorca needed a broader economic base and less heavy reliance on tourism. He supported new economic paths that could sit alongside protecting the territory and safeguarding society’s wellbeing.

The Fòrum said Alomar, a committed supporter of the group in recent years, brought ideas and reflection to its debates. It credited him with backing dialogue, understanding and co-operation between organisations, and with helping to create spaces for shared discussion.

Through his articles and contributions to the Fòrum’s debates, Alomar helped shape many of the group’s proposals in recent years, it said. December’s congress will remember his contribution while continuing work on the issues he championed.
