The Mallorca-based Balearic Government has urged calm over the crisis in Ceuta, warning on Friday, 28 August, against situations that could later be regretted. Spokesman Antoni Costa said the administration shared the desperation felt by people in Ceuta and backed both them and the city’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas.

Costa blamed Spain’s central government for the situation, saying it had failed to manage the crisis. He accused ministers of contradicting each other or lying, and criticised the prime minister for being on holiday.

He also described the situation as a health and security crisis and said Spain’s integrity had been breached. Costa said the Balearic Government supported the demands behind demonstrations planned elsewhere in Spain on 2 September.
