Mallorca council: Vox seeks Ceuta crisis inquiry

Vox will bring the Ceuta crisis to Mallorca Island Council in Palma next Thursday, seeking backing for an inquiry into possible Spanish government responsibility. The party wants the council to call on groups in Spain’s Congress of Deputies to allow the proposal to proceed. Its move centres on Article 102 of the Spanish Constitution, which covers the criminal liability of the Prime Minister.

Toni Gili, Vox’s spokesman at the council, said the events in Ceuta should not be treated as simply a migration episode. He said thousands of people were being used to put pressure on Spain’s borders.

Vox says it is not trying to take judges’ place or decide criminal liability before any investigation. If an inquiry finds responsibility, the constitutionally competent bodies and, where applicable, the Supreme Court should decide what follows, the party said.

The party also plans to table the same proposal in councils where it has representatives. Separately, Vox has criticised the town halls of Manacor and Algaida for not joining Wednesday’s rally called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces in support of Ceuta and its people. Vox representatives Esteban Sureda and Miguel Martínez have asked the mayors to explain their decision.
