Ceuta crisis: Sánchez opens Congress under pressure
Pedro Sánchez brings his MPs, senators and Members of the European Parliament to Congress in Madrid on Monday to launch Spain’s new political season. The Ceuta crisis forms the backdrop to the meeting. His government’s plan to submit a 2027 budget before the end of the year will also be on the table.
The prime minister faced Congress at an extraordinary sitting on Thursday over the crisis in Ceuta, following mass arrivals of migrants from Morocco on 30 and 31 July. The government came under fire from across much of parliament, not only from the People’s Party and Vox. Its junior coalition partner, Sumar, said Sánchez had reacted “late” and rejected his account clearing Morocco of responsibility as unconvincing.
Budget plan faces a tense political year
Socialist sources told Europa Press that Sánchez called the meeting in the first week of the regular parliamentary session. That session is due to end before Christmas, while the government says it intends to present its 2027 budget before this year is out.
The coming political year leads into regional and local elections due at the end of May 2027. A date has not yet been set for a general election. Sánchez still says he wants to serve out the term, which ends in July, but this week left open the possibility of a “technical” early election.
