Ceuta migrant crisis: PP regional chiefs back Vivas
Spain’s PP regional leaders rallied behind Ceuta president Juan Jesús Vivas in Madrid on Monday, 7 September, amid a bitter row over the migrant crisis in the autonomous city. They defended his handling of the situation after mass migrant arrivals in July. The show of support came at a Nueva Economía Forum breakfast event led by Vivas.
The dispute was sparked by Transport Minister Óscar Puente, who said Vivas had become a mere pawn of PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo and had forgotten his institutional role.
Andalusia’s regional president, Juanma Moreno, rejected that charge. He called Vivas a figure for coexistence in Ceuta: prudent, sensible and loyal to the institutions.
Galicia’s leader Alfonso Rueda said Vivas deserved “all the support and recognition” because he was the only person truly managing the crisis. He branded the Spanish government’s handling “an absolute disaster” and said it was attacking Vivas to hide its own inability to act.
Castile and León president Alfonso Fernández Mañueco praised Vivas’s courage, common sense, resolve and leadership. He accused the government of veering between neglect, incompetence and what he called an unacceptable attempt to conceal the situation.
Murcia president Fernando López Miras said the criticism was meant to cover up a lack of information and transparency. He said Vivas was filling the gap left by Spain’s government, while Mañueco delivered the PP’s message: “Ceuta is not alone.”
