Mallorca leader calls Balearics to Ceuta protest

Marga Prohens is calling on people across the Balearic Islands to join Wednesday’s rally in support of Ceuta. Speaking in Palma, Mallorca, the Balearic president accused Spain’s government of withholding information about the mass arrival of migrants in the Spanish autonomous city.

The demonstration was called by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. Prohens said it was not about party politics or ideology, but backing the people of Ceuta.

She said fresh details of a National Police report gave people more reason to take to the streets than the day before. The report, she said, attributes the mass entry to Moroccan security forces.

Prohens said this meant the episode was not simply a migration issue, but an attack on Spain’s borders and territorial integrity. She called it an “invasion” by Morocco and said the rally should demand a response.

She also accused the national government of misleading the public for more than a month with a false account of events and of concealing information. Prohens warned that what happened in Ceuta could happen elsewhere in Spain, and demanded that the government explain why it had, in her view, cleared Morocco rather than protected Spaniards.
