Mallorca town halls set for Ceuta protests as parties clash

Mallorca town halls are due to host Ceuta protests on Wednesday, after PP and Vox urged people across the Balearic Islands to attend. The demonstrations focus on the situation in Ceuta, while PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca, Més per Menorca and Unidas Podemos accuse PP of using them for political ends.

The calls were made through the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. PP parliamentary spokesman Sebastià Sagreras said the protests would show that “Ceuta is not alone”.

He claimed a similar situation could reach the Balearic Islands, pointing to what he described as an established migration route from northern Algeria to the archipelago. Sagreras also attacked the central government's handling of the migration crisis and questioned whether it had had any connivance with Morocco.

PSIB deputy spokesman Marc Pons said PP had unilaterally used the federation to call the demonstrations, describing it as a tool for the party’s own interests. He added that Ceuta’s two main neighbourhood associations would not join because they did not want to be politicised in support of PP.

All parties except PSIB also criticised the central government’s management of the crisis.
