Ceuta protests: TV crews attacked, Amnesty warns

Television crews making live broadcasts were met with violence, abuse and intimidation on Wednesday during protests linked to Ceuta. Incidents were reported near the Ceuta border crossing, at Plaza de Cibeles in Madrid and around the Congress of Deputies. Amnesty International says some crews had to stop reporting after the attacks.

The human rights group says those affected reported that security forces either did not intervene or arrived too late on some occasions. It has called on the authorities to protect journalists and ensure they can work safely.

Amnesty urges action over threats to reporters

Daniel Canales, Amnesty International’s researcher on human rights violations, said authorities have a duty to keep journalists safe. He said that protection is vital if society is to receive varied and independent information, and that freedom of expression and information must be defended.

Amnesty also blamed Vox for helping to create a climate in which media workers face a greater risk of attack. It said the party has for years accused some outlets of manipulation and recently called RTVE journalists “terrorists”.

The organisation called on all political parties and authorities to publicly condemn violence against journalists, as well as racist and xenophobic acts and rhetoric. It says such behaviour fuels hatred and social tension.
