Palma joins Ceuta rallies: EU accuses PP of misuse

Palma Mayor Jaime Martínez has joined other PP mayors in backing rallies for Ceuta, prompting an accusation that public administration is being used for party politics. Esquerra Unida Mallorca made the claim on Tuesday, 1 September, after the mayor signed up to the calls for demonstrations.

Esquerra Unida Mallorca says the rallies do not come from a social group or organisation. Instead, it alleges that interests on the right and far right are using Ceuta’s human crisis to deepen political division and hostility towards migrants.

The party says the initiative grew out of groups including Núcleo Nacional, Vox and the Falangist JONS. It also claims the PP has concealed who called the rallies while using the mobilisation for its own political ends.

EU Mallorca says the organisers have offered no political plan and are fuelling confrontation with the central government. It also criticises the central government’s handling of the situation and its political relationship with what it calls Morocco’s authoritarian regime.

While insisting that Ceuta is Spanish territory and that border sovereignty must be protected, the party rejects what it describes as false patriotism. It says the organisers have not condemned the influence it attributes to the United States and Israel, or the 145 deaths it says occurred during the incident.
