Ceuta rallies set for Wednesday as PP rejects party row
People are set to gather outside town halls across Spain on Wednesday in support of Ceuta, as the autonomous city marks its day. The Partido Popular says the rallies began with calls from people in Ceuta on social media and should not become a party-political fight.
Juan Bravo, the PP’s deputy secretary for finance, infrastructure and housing, defended the planned gatherings in Seville on Tuesday. He said people in Ceuta want to make sure the city is not forgotten after the current events fade from public attention.
Bravo said there was concern that, within 15 days, other problems or corruption cases could push Ceuta out of the headlines.
PSOE urges people to stay away
The Socialist Party, PSOE, has accused the PP of using the demonstration for party purposes and called on people not to take part. Bravo rejected that claim, saying the rally belongs to everyone and Spain should show solidarity with Ceuta.
He also criticised Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of failing to pay enough attention to Ceuta. Those are allegations made by the PP politician.
PP criticises remarks on King’s visit
Bravo also challenged Sánchez’s comments about a possible visit to Ceuta by King Felipe VI. He said the King had spoken with Ceuta’s president, Juan Jesús Vivas, received him in audience and committed to visiting the autonomous city.
But Bravo said the King needs all his official acts to be countersigned.
