Ceuta rally: PP presses Menorca councils to join

The PP is calling on the town halls of Maó and Ciutadella, on Menorca, to join a Ceuta solidarity rally planned for Wednesday at 20.00. Spain’s Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP) has backed the call. Juana Mari Pons, the PP spokeswoman in Ciutadella, says the council should make it possible for citizens to attend.

Virginia Victori, the PP spokeswoman in Maó, says the Maó town hall routinely joins appeals from FEMP and the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands (Felib). She argues that the Ceuta rally should be treated no differently.

Victori says Maó has previously organised or joined rallies over events beyond Spain’s borders. She has urged Mayor Héctor Pons to put the town hall above party interests and represent all people in Maó.

If the PSOE chooses not to attend, Victori says, the council should still authorise and help arrange a gathering for people who want to show their support for Ceuta. She adds that Ceuta’s situation concerns Spain as a whole and says Maó and Ciutadella should stand with the autonomous city and its people.
