Palma calls Ceuta rally as mayor warns Mallorca

Palma, Mallorca, will stage a Ceuta solidarity rally in Plaza de Cort on Wednesday 2 September. The gathering starts at 20.00. Mayor Jaime Martínez is calling on people to attend, saying events in the Spanish autonomous city should serve as a warning for the Balearics.

Palma City Council has joined a call by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces for gatherings outside town halls in support of Ceuta. Martínez says the demonstration will also defend Spain’s territorial integrity.

In an Instagram video, the mayor said more than 11,000 migrants had reached the Balearics by boat over the past 15 months. He said the arrivals had placed unbearable pressure on public resources and services, and criticised the migration policies of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

Martínez called on Spain’s central government to provide the resources needed to protect the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and to guarantee security for people in Ceuta. He said Sánchez should stop “looking the other way”.

The Balearic branch of the People’s Party has also urged people to join the rally outside Palma City Hall and similar gatherings in other municipalities. Its general secretary, Sandra Fernández, said Ceuta was part of Spain and that the demonstrations should send the city a message of unity and support from the Balearics.
