Mallorca PSIB skips Ceuta rally, backs tourism chain

Palma, Mallorca’s Socialists will not attend the Ceuta support rally outside Palma Town Hall on Wednesday, 2 September. Iago Negueruela, head of the Palma Socialist group and the party’s mayoral candidate, calls the event party-political.

Negueruela said the rally in Cort Square was being called by the president of the PP, not the mayor. He accused the PP of using an issue that needed agreement between institutions for party advantage, and urged calm amid rising tension.

PSIB rejects nationwide call

The PSIB said it would not call rallies from any of the town halls it governs or join events promoted by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces. The party expressed solidarity with people in Ceuta, saying the situation required cooperation between institutions rather than electoral calculation.

It also criticised PP-led regional governments, including the Balearic Government, for refusing what it described as their share of the solidarity measures sought by Ceuta. The PSIB said Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care Minister Sandra Fernández had backed the central government’s €25 million allocation for minors in Ceuta while repeating that the Balearics would not take in any minors through a distribution scheme.

Call for tourism protest

Instead, Negueruela urged people to join Saturday’s “a la fresca” human chain against tourism overcrowding, called by activist Madò Farta. He said an earlier “sopar a la fresca” gathering at the Born had been a success.

He said nothing had been done on tourism in three years and accused the Balearic Government of denying the pressure on the islands. The protest is aimed at the regional government and Palma City Council, he said, and will finish at Consolat de Mar.
