Palma row: Podemos attacks mayor over Ceuta rally

A political row has broken out in Palma after Wednesday’s rally backing Ceuta in Plaza de Cort. Unidas Podemos says Mayor Jaime Martínez allowed the square to be used in a partisan way, while warning that far-right groups were present at the protest. The party made the claims on 3 September.

Lucía Muñoz, Podemos’ Balearic Islands coordinator, said Martínez had permitted the Ceuta rally in Plaza de Cort after a sopar a la fresca — an outdoor evening meal — had been refused there weeks earlier.

The party also alleged that Palma City Council had called a mobilisation backed by “neo-Nazi” groups. It said the square became a setting for “fascist” symbols and racist and xenophobic slogans.

Muñoz accused the Partido Popular and Vox of targeting desperate migrants more readily than Morocco’s regime. She said the issue was not people crossing a border, but Spain placing part of its migration policy in the hands of what she called an authoritarian regime.

She also attacked the Socialist Party’s handling of the Ceuta crisis, saying it was helping those who use racism and xenophobia to gain politically. Muñoz called on Spain’s central government to end relations with Morocco’s regime and seek European Union help to protect human rights.
