Palma child abandonment arrest: grandmother detained
National Police have arrested a woman in Palma, Mallorca, on suspicion of child abandonment after her grandson was reportedly left alone at their home. Officers were called at about 1am last Sunday after neighbours reported a child on a fourth-floor balcony.
Police said the boy, who appeared distressed, told an officer speaking to him from a neighbouring balcony that he was alone and unable to open the flat door. He said his grandmother had gone to look for a relative.
Neighbours reported repeated calls for help
Residents told officers they had found the child shouting on the fourth-floor landing at about 11pm, with the home’s door open. They contacted the grandmother, who returned around half an hour later and took the boy inside.
A neighbour later heard the child calling for help again and stayed with him until National Police officers arrived. The grandmother told police she had gone shopping and that the boy had been alone for only ten minutes.
The child’s mother was at work during the incident, police said. A relative took responsibility for the boy after officers contacted her.
