216 cubic metres of mud: Ciutadella harbour mix-up

216 cubic metres of mud have been cleared from a boat ramp in Ciutadella harbour, on Menorca, without senior ports officials knowing about the work. Balearic sea minister Juan Manuel Lafuente admits the communication failure in parliament on Wednesday, 7 October.

The ramp had been blocked by sediment. Lafuente says the work was urgent because private boat owners needed to use it over the Easter holidays. The harbour manager thought the job had been approved; the ministry official responsible thought he had not given final approval. Lafuente says both acted in good faith.

Workers put the mud in the Colársega area to dry before moving it to an appropriate site. Lafuente says he first learnt about the work when Ciutadella’s mayor, Maria Jesús Bagur, called him about the mud in the harbour. He then asked for it to be moved as soon as possible.

Lafuente ordered an internal report and had the material tested. The test found it was not dangerous, he says.
