Ciutadella puts €768,000 into solar power and trees
Ciutadella, Menorca, is set to spend €767,940 on new trees, solar power and cleaner transport over 2026 and 2027. The town council’s governing board approved the agreement with the Consell Insular de Menorca on Wednesday, 26 August. The largest share, €526,800, goes on solar installations and energy efficiency.
The plan is part of a €4.4 million programme through which the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency will fund climate action across the island’s municipalities in 2026 and 2027.
Trees and less grass in public spaces
Ciutadella has earmarked €86,400 for its urban green spaces. Empty tree pits in the town are due to be replanted, while the Margalida Florit school playground will gain trees to provide more shade.
Grass around the obelisk on Plaça des Born is to be removed. The agreement also covers a project to tackle invasive plants near Platja Gran, improvements to trees on Plaça Iamona and Plaça des Pins, and plans to remove sealed surfaces and improve the trees in the Sector B8 green area.
Solar panels, bikes and charging points
Projects will be drawn up for solar-panel systems at Pintor Torrent school and on the roof of the Municipal Brigade building. The island council will enlarge the existing solar installations at the Local Police building and Tita Llorens municipal swimming pool, adding battery storage, and will install new solar panels at Roser Gener nursery school.
A further €107,240 is allocated to energy and mobility measures. Ciutadella plans to buy electric bikes for council staff journeys and add an electric vehicle, carry out energy audits in municipal buildings, update its climate and sustainable energy action plan, and improve lighting at Museu de Can Saura. The Consell Insular de Menorca will also install public electric-vehicle charging points worth €47,500.
