Civil War memorial walls planned across the Balearics

The Balearic Government has offered to work with seven town halls across the Balearic Islands to install memorial walls for people killed in Civil War bombings. The move, announced on 25 August, follows the opening of Palma, Mallorca’s Wall of Dignity on 27 July.

The Department of the Presidency, Coordination of Government Action and Local Cooperation has written to the councils of Artà, Inca, Santa Maria del Camí, Ses Salines and Sóller on Mallorca, Maó on Menorca, and Eivissa on Ibiza. Documented bombing victims are linked to each of the municipalities.

Researchers have identified 152 people who died in the bombings: 97 from Mallorca, 29 from Menorca and 26 from Eivissa. Documentary and archive material has also been used to establish where the attacks took place.

Each council will choose the location for its memorial. It may stand at a site connected directly to a bombing or elsewhere, provided it offers a dignified, accessible and visible place of remembrance.

The government said the project is intended to give victims a public presence in the municipalities affected, rather than leaving their memory solely in archives and historical research.
