Mallorca boats clear 2.5 tonnes of coastal rubbish
Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands, sees cleaning boats remove 2.5 tonnes of rubbish from its waters and coast in September. Crews also deal with a drifting boat and remove large pieces of wood, building fences and a swimming ring. The Balearic Ministry of the Sea and Water Cycle says 23 boats work across the four islands throughout the month’s 30 days.
Across the islands, the haul tops 5.3 tonnes. Plastic makes up the largest share: 2.3 tonnes, or 44.23% of the total. The boats also collect 1.4 tonnes of wood and 1.2 tonnes of other materials. After Mallorca, Eivissa accounts for two tonnes, Menorca 408 kilograms and Formentera 405.45 kilograms.
The service also reports more jellyfish in bathing areas across the islands. Its boats collect between 15 and 20 kilograms of various species. No Portuguese man o’ war is collected on the islands.
