€58,390: Mallorca coast cases rise in Can Picafort

Six businesses in Can Picafort, Mallorca, are now subject to proceedings over alleged unauthorised use of public coastal land after two new rulings issued on 3 September. The six known cases carry a provisional combined amount of €58,390. GOB Mallorca is demanding political accountability from Santa Margalida Town Hall.

The environmental group says the two latest cases show this is not a one-off. It says several shops and food businesses in the coastal area are affected by irregular occupation of public space.

The proceedings target both the operators of the businesses and Santa Margalida Town Hall, which owns the land involved. GOB says the sites were occupied without the required authorisation.

Three of the six cases concern the same company, according to the group. Proposed penalties and the economic benefit calculated by the Island Council total more than €29,500 for those files.

GOB calls the matter particularly serious because it says the company is linked to Eugenio Garrido, the councillor responsible for Works, Services and Infrastructure. His remit includes organising and running the beaches.

The group wants Garrido removed from municipal responsibilities connected to the issue. It also wants the town hall to disclose all municipal authorisations, sums collected or left uncollected, and every file opened after inspections.
