22,000 jobs lost: Correos workers protest in Spain

Correos workers are due to protest outside the main post office in every Spanish province on Thursday, 3 September, after their union accused the public company of failing to deliver more staff and better conditions. The Central Independent and Civil Servants Union (CSIF) called the action, which it says is the first in a series of demonstrations.

CSIF says Correos has not met commitments to strengthen its workforce, introduce a 35-hour week, turn part-time roles into full-time jobs and start a plan to bring younger staff into the company.

Further action planned this month

The union plans further protests across Spain on Thursday, 17 September. It intends to end the campaign with a demonstration in Madrid on Wednesday, 30 September, where it will demand an immediate change of course.

CSIF says Correos changed its human resources director after the protests were announced in July. Fernando Ramírez was replaced by Jaime Pérez de la Cruz, who takes up the post on Wednesday.

Union says workforce has shrunk sharply

According to CSIF, Correos has lost more than 22,000 jobs in the past 10 years, with its workforce falling from 66,000 to 44,000. More than 4,000 current employees work part-time and earn between 800 and 900 euros, the union says.

Of 7,757 posts advertised in 2023, more than 2,000 were part-time, according to CSIF. It says most of those workers remain in the same position almost three years later because transfer procedures have not moved forward.
