Correos workers protest over 22,000 lost jobs

Correos workers are due to protest outside the main post office in every Spanish province on Thursday, 3 September. The CSIF union has called the action over staff shortages and insecure work at the public postal service. It says Correos has not kept promises made to its workforce.

Union says staffing pledges have not been met

CSIF says the outstanding measures include taking on more staff, bringing in a 35-hour working week, turning part-time roles into full-time jobs and starting a plan to renew the workforce.

The union says the failure to recruit additional staff has cost Correos more than 22,000 jobs over the past 10 years. It puts the workforce at 44,000, down from 66,000, with more than 4,000 staff working part-time for between 800 and 900 euros.

In the 2023 recruitment round for 7,757 posts, more than 2,000 jobs were part-time, CSIF says. Nearly three years later, most of those workers remain in the same position because transfer procedures have not progressed.

Further action planned across Spain

The 3 September protests open a wider campaign, according to CSIF. Further action is planned across Spain on Thursday, 17 September, followed by a demonstration in Madrid on Wednesday, 30 September, where the union will demand an immediate change of course.

CSIF says its mobilisation announcement in July prompted Correos to replace its human resources director, Fernando Ramírez, with Jaime Pérez de la Cruz.
