Palma cost of living: MÉS demands direct family aid

Responsible for this content: Frank Menze

Palma, Mallorca: MÉS wants direct aid for families on low and middle incomes as the cost of living climbs. The party made its call to Palma City Council on Monday, 5 October, and says people living alone should qualify too. It points to €11 million in tax savings from cuts approved by the city government during this council term.

MÉS wants the aid to depend on income and need, without preventing people from receiving other social benefits. It says the council could draw on measures used during the Covid pandemic, including food shopping cards and housing help. Mayoral candidate David Pujol says filling a fuel tank, paying bills and covering everyday expenses cost more and more.

The €11 million figure is the city government’s estimate of savings for taxpayers, according to MÉS. The party argues that, without those tax cuts, Palma would have more money for direct help. It also wants enough funding for everyone who meets the proposed criteria. The council has not announced the aid MÉS is seeking.
