Mallorca egg farm complaint: dead hens beside eggs
Mallorca: Dead hens lie beside eggs at Es Caparó farm in Manacor, animal welfare groups say, warning of a food safety risk. Arde and Satya Animal say footage filmed on 11 and 13 July 2026 shows live hens and eggs among decomposing carcasses. On Wednesday, 21 October 2026, the groups reported that they had submitted the footage with complaints to prosecutors and the Balearic Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and the Natural Environment.
Eggs beside carcasses
In some of the footage, eggs touch both droppings and dead birds, the groups say. They also allege overcrowded cages, dirt and hens crushed to death through negligent handling.
Vet Alba Nieto Palau examined the footage for a report. She describes laying hens with extensive feather loss, carcasses across the farm and a bird that died after becoming trapped in a cage. She says a long build-up of droppings points to serious, persistent hygiene problems.
A second complaint against the same operator
Es Caparó has three sheds and room for around 180,000 hens. It produces around 56 million eggs a year, according to the campaigners’ estimates. Avícola Son Perot also runs the Mirabó farm in Manacor, where the groups reported carcasses, hens eating other hens and eggs with mites on Tuesday.
The groups say neighbours have long complained of flies and smells from Es Caparó and land where its hens’ droppings are deposited. They also claim nitrates have contaminated neighbours’ well water, leaving it unusable for drinking or cooking. Avícola Son Perot said on Tuesday that the groups were running a harassment campaign against it. The company has previously been penalised for failings at other farms.
